I know this tale as “there and back again”, and I am quite sure the Red Book in my keeping is the original. I’m pleased that you Big Folk enjoy our hobbitish ways!
If you are interested, I have recently put "pen to paper", as it were, and have been telling my own small adventure in the Shire - I would be pleased if you would give it a read (as far as I have got)
I really enjoyed this article. I never noticed just how cleverly Tolkien tells the reader about Bilbo's back-and-forth inner conflict between his respectable Baggins side and his adventurous Took side, but thanks for pointing it out (And now I appreciate that Tolkien was both clever enough to write it without being too obvious about it. It's easy to see if you know where to look, but Tolkien doesn't hit you over the head.)
I need to reread both "The Hobbit" and "On Fairy Stories" in the near future.
I also loved the note about coffee at the end. It would take a better Tolkien scholar or bigger nerd than me to confirm or deny whether Chapter 1 of "The Hobbit" is the only mention of coffee in the Shire or Middle Earth, but no doubt Bilbo knows how to roast his coffee beans just right for either a Baggins coffee party or a Took adventure feast. (I also wonder if there are cats in the Shire. Hobbits seem like they would make good cat owners with pampered pets who enjoy sunbeams in round windows and second breakfasts of fish and cream).
Seems like a good time to reread The Hobbit 😌
Yesss!

Reading lord of the rings has given me more appreciation for nature.
“By all means, he is enchanted.” This was great!
